I’m sure most of you are familiar with the story of Daniel and the lions’ den. Let’s take a closer look at this event that is found in Daniel 6.

During the reign of King Darius, there were administrators that the King appointed to rule over different areas. They were jealous of Daniel because the King planned to put Daniel in charge over all of them. They talked the King into making a rule that all people were to pray only to the king for the next 30 days. Once King Darius signed the decree it could not be revoked.

Now the administrators knew that Daniel prayed to his God 3 times a day. They sat out to catch Daniel breaking this decree and when they reported it to the king, he had no choice but to enforce it. The punishment was to be thrown into a den of lions. King Darius liked Daniel and knew that he had faith in his God. The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!”

King Darius was so troubled by the whole incident that he wasn’t able to sleep that night. The lion’s den had been sealed by a large boulder so that Daniel could not escape. We don’t really know much about Daniel’s reaction, judging from King Darius, he knew that Daniel had a lot of faith. I’d say that King Darius held out hope that God would come through and protect Daniel. Through this failed attempt to destroy Daniel, the administrators only brought about their own demise. The king had them and their wives and children thrown into the lion’s den! To see that Daniel was protected by God and that the others were destroyed had to prove to the people that Daniel’s God was powerful.

Could you trust in God to protect you from such a dangerous foe? Many of us don’t think to ask God for the protection that we need in our day-to-day lives. But God loves us and we must remember that he wants us to call on him. He wants to be there for us! May we all have the faith of Daniel when we must face the “lions” in our lives!
